Injury Update 15/10/09

Latest injury news from football365.com...
Liverpool have confirmed that Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were withdrawn from training today after picking up injuries whilst on international duty this week.

Torres suffered an adductor problem whilst with Spain which limited him to the substitutes' bench for his country's game with Bosnia. The Spain club doctor said on Wednesday that Torres complained of being in pain when he struck the ball, which hardly sounds ideal for a footballer

Gerrard missed England's victory over Belarus at Wembley with a groin strain. Both players are to be further assessed by the Reds' medical team.

Meanwhile, Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos could miss the rest of the season after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Greece.

But if Rafa Benitez wants any sympathy, he won't find it from Birmingham manager Alex McLeish.

The Blues will again be without Gregory Vignal, David Murphy, Stuart Parnaby and Martin Taylor while Keith Fahey and Franck Queudrue are added to the list of casualties ahead of this weekend's clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

But the good news is that Cameron Jerome is fit to return to action after two months out without an ankle injury.

Manchester City also have their fair share of injuries, compounded by Wayne Bridge limping out of the England game with a groin strain, but Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott and Nigel De Jong should be fit to play this weekend.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has a doubt over Michael Mancienne for the weekend's visit to Everton because of a cold he picked up on duty with the England Under-21s.

But the good news is that Richard Stearman, Chris Iwelumo, Jody Craddock and Matt Murray were all training after spells on the sidelines.

Glenn Whelan is optimistic he will be fit for Stoke City's game with West Ham United on Saturday after picking up an injury on international duty.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder suffered a minor calf complaint after scoring in his country's 2-2 draw with World Cup holders Italy at the weekend.

"We don't know if it's a slight strain or a pull," said Whelan in The Sentinel. "We've had it scanned and the results will tell us more.

"But personally, I would like to think I'm in with a chance on Saturday."
The news on Torres is a real worry for me...I could be left to make some huge decisions tomorrow night as I'm still holding Torres & Rooney.

Alternative are of course Van Persie, Berbatov, Saha, Defoe...but I really haven't decided which way to go.

Is all this news causing you as much stress as it's causing me?

Cheers,
AM

Berbatov has hit top form, so should make the decision easier for you.

Stearman is an animal, and if you can get him in then do so. Just look at his returns.

With so many Internationals, injuries, and doubtful starters, this will make for the most interesting week.

Could anyone please shed light on Dempsey's situation? Last I read AM wrote he's a doubt with a shoulder injury. He didn't travel to neither national team games so at least jet lag isn't an issue. If he plays I'd fancy him to score, or at least get a fair amount of SOTs.

Hull and Wolves seem to be the biggest pushovers thus far. Burnley have exceeded expectations being surprisingly strong at home and Birmingham can also put up a fair fight. Also having watched three or so Pompey games I can't understand why people think they're sure to drop. With all the turmoil and emergency buys at the club they've played surprisingly well, but just haven't had luck on their side. A lack of clinical forwards of course doesn't help either, that's not to say I don't fancy Defoes chances against them this weekend.

Very disappointed about Torres, I only kept hold of him last week against Chelsea because I had him at a big discount. Looks like there is going to be some friday changes from me as i also have rooney.

These news actually cheer me up - with Torres out and maybe Rooney too, less strikers will be able to get more points than mine.
Also, Bridge's doubt plus Zabaleta's injury make Richards a good option, as RB or CB. I hope I'll get the okay about Walcott, and then I'll be really happy!

Assuming that Rooney will not play, here's what I've got (those in parentheses are new adds):

Jensen
Vermaelen / Heitinga / (Bassong)
Fabregas / Bily / (Giggs) / (D. Murphy)
Drogba / Diamanti / (Saha)

Not a big fan of Bassong in FF but needed the extra cash to get out of the 7.00 MF trap. Murphy, a set piece taker at home vs. Hull sounds like a good option.

But if Rooney is fit everything could change. Would likely go cheap in the back with Sonko or in MF with Mokoena to squeeze one more quality body in there.

Giggs will stay, no matter what.

With or without Torres and Gerrard I just have a feeling Liverpool will still win this, leaving Yossi and Kyut interesting options for me. Not to mention many people won't have them and I could use a gamble paying off.

i think kuyt would be a great pick!

To Andrew:
I would pick Krancjar, good fixture, cheaper and in my opinion he will score as well.

Kuyt could be played as the lone striker without Torres leaving Yossi to either fill a wing or more likely slot in behind Kuyt if Gerrard is also out. Possibly see a start for Ryan Babel with Gerrard/Torres out

The injury to Rooney is really worrying as I am holding him on discount. But I do not want to risk having a non-playing striker in my team. So if he is out, Berbs will be in his place alongside Saha & Drog.

I would have love to have Adebayor or Defoe for the 3rd striker too. Also, Kuyt like Kellz mentioned above. So many choices....this week is going to be all about getting the right combo of forwards.

Good luck to me & all others ^~^

Guys in the Full PhysioRoom.com Table it also states kuyt is injured.. Would he be fit to face sunderland this weekend?

Mark - Yes, he's ready...

D2D.. yeah.. too many forwards choices.. all got 50% to either score big points or just suck..

currently been tweaking these forwards for my team (all because of Roon injury news)..

1.Berba (great form, no1 replacement for roon in MU squad).
2.Adebayour (comeback match.. could explode with goal/goals).
3.Saha (great fixture, great form, consistent point scoring machine).
4.RVP (same with saha).
5.Crouch (same with saha & rvp).
6.Kuyt (replacement for torres.. but physioroom says hes injured too.. is there any injury news that we're not aware off?).
7.Defoe (slightly dropped in point scores.. but great fixture, he might return to his old scoring form).
8.Defoe (season keeper.. i think everyone has him).

Hey AM i have another question.. When a person scores a goal, is it also counted as a SOT?

Assistant Manager said...

Maxer - I'm looking at the exact same list! But is number 8 meant to be Drogba?

Mark - Yep, a goal is 10 points...7 for the goal, 3 for the SOT. Add 2 if it's the match winning goal & another 3 for a set piece goal.

Cheers,
AM

Does anyone know anything about Obertan at ManU. Any chance he is ready to play?

Unknown said...

@AM- in Maxer's comment, i would say Drogba is unquestionnable player. I guess 80% of YFF manager have him now.

God, still waiting on Moyes's hint about his starting team. Really need to decide on Bily now.

Obertan is meant to be playing in Scotland for Man U select on Sunday so unlikely he will play at the weekend.

"Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of Manchester United's clash with Bolton at the weekend.

The England star has picked up a calf problem and Sir Alex Ferguson will not risk him against the Trotters.

Ferguson is awaiting news on Dimitar Berbatov, whose partner gave birth on Thursday, but has Michael Owen fit and ready for the visit of Bolton to Old Trafford.

More to follow."
